D.O.G. FOLDER

Our class uses a Daily Organizational Guide or D.O.G. folder each day.  The plastic coated folder has brads that help contain important class information, such as, the monthly homework calendar, handwriting sample sheet, monthly calendar of events, extra writing paper, contact information, and a zipper pouch for notes and daily reading books.  I also labeled each pocket with "right back to school" on the right side and "left at home" on the left side. We spend the first week discussing the value of the folder and I stress the importance of taking responsibility of the D.O.G. folder.  I believe good organizational skills are the key to success!!

CLASS RULES

My classroom behavior management policy is based upon the philosophy that each child has a right to learn in an optimal learning environment. In order to achieve this goal, each child is expected to behave in appropriate manner according to school and classroom expectations. I use a simple stoplight as a visual reminder that rules are in place and to hold the students accountable for inappropriate behavior.

1. Raise your hand
2. No running in the classroom
3. Use inside voice
4. Be kind to your friends and teachers

STAR STUDENT

Each Friday, a new Star Student for the upcoming week will be announced.  This lucky boy or girl will fill out the information with the help of their parents and return the informational poster on Monday.  It will be displayed on the Star Student board and the child will have the opportunity to share it with the class.

DAILY SCHEDULE

This is the schedule we will follow at the beginning of the year. As the school year progresses, guided reading will take up a larger portion of the day and the schedule will be reworked. For example, less time will be spent in calendar and working on HWT. Click on the icon to download our schedule (.pdf).

HOMEWORK PROCEDURES

Students will be assigned homework that consists of daily reading practice and a monthly packet. The
monthly packet has a homework calendar.  Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday the students will have one assignment to complete.  Some assignments are written while others are activities for you to do with your child orally. Help your child complete the work each night and return the folder every day. If you are unable to complete an assignment, please do not worry. The homework is for extra practice and used to develop good study habits for 1st grade.

BUCKET FILLERS

We use Carol McCloud's book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? for our character development program.  Through simple prose and vivid illustrations, this heartwarming book encourages positive behavior as children see how rewarding it is to express daily kindness, appreciation, and love. Bucket filling and dipping are effective metaphors for understanding the effects of our actions and words on the well being of others and ourselves. Bucket filling is easy.  It doesn't cost any money.  It doesn't take much time.  It doesn't matter how young or old you are. Bucket filling makes everyone feel good. ~ Carol McCloud

BIRTHDAYS

Birthdays are very exciting for kindergarteners!  If your child would like to celebrate his or her special day with the class, just let me know in advance so that I may plan accordingly. The birthday celebration will take place during recess.

                  ALLERGIES

If your child has any known allergies, please inform me personally as soon as possible.  Our class will occasionally have cooking projects and birthday celebrations.  I will make arrangements for a different snack or I may ask the parent to send in an appropriate food item.

VOLUNTEERS

Please see me or send me an email if you are interested in becoming a volunteer in our classroom. There will be several opportunities to assist throughout the school year, such as writer's workshop, field trips, parties, creating center activities, etc.

DRESS FOR SCHOOL

Please dress your child appropriately for the weather.  We will go outside every day (as long as it is not raining).  Don't forget to write your child's name on all removable clothing (coat, hat, gloves, etc.).  I want to make sure all items make it back home!
